Identifying undetected heart failure from general practice registers

 
Previous investigations, prescriptions, symptoms or admissions may help to identify someone with undetected heart failure such as (not exhaustive):

Investigation

  • NTproBNP/BNP; and
  • Echo.

Prescriptions

  • Diuretics (metolazone, furosemide, bumetanide, torasemide, Bendroflumethiazde; and
  • ACEi / ARNI / BB / MRA (and combinations thereof).

Symptoms

  • Breathlessness (including young people with unexplained breathlessness e.g. post viral infection);
  • Fatigue; and
  • Sign - oedema.

Admissions to hospital

  • Heart failure admissions;
  • STEMI/NSTEMI – possible lost to follow-up post admission and/or no repeat echo;
  • Cardiac procedures (CRT/ICD);
  • Acute kidney Injury;
  • Hypertension;
  • Diabetes; and
  • Atrial fibrillation/flutter.
