Investigations for diagnosis in primary care
 

  • History;
  • Clinical examination;
  • NT-proBNP/BNP*;
  • Renal function (inc. eGFR);
  • Thyroid function profile;
  • Liver function profile;
  • Lipid profile;
  • Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c); and
  • Full blood count.

 
Investigations for diagnosis in urgent care
 

  • History;
  • Clinical examination;
  • NT-proBNP/BNP*;
  • ECG;
  • ABG;
  • Chest X-Ray;
  • Renal function (inc. eGFR);
  • Thyroid function profile;
  • Liver function profile;
  • Lipid profile;
  • Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c); and
  • Full blood count; plus
  • Trop I (only if chest pain); and/or
  • D-dimer (if PE is suspected).

*NOTE: NICE clearly advocate using NT-proBNP due to its sensitivity and specificity. Where this test is not available use BNP
