Pillars of drug treatment in heart failure for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

Pillars of drug treatment in heart failure for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction

There are several aims of treatment for patients with HFrEF:

  1. prevent disease progression,
  2. reduction in mortality,
  3. prevention of recurrent hospitalisations due to worsening HF, and
  4. improvement in clinical status and functional capacity.

Collectively, these treatment goals should all include a focus on person-centred care and improvement in quality of life.

NOTE: Rapid optimisation and personalised care in patients who have frailty/in last year of life is essential

Most patients with HF will require treatment with loop diuretics for symptom control.
